Hillel, der Rabbi, berühmter Gesetzeslehrer zu Christi Zeit, soll kurz vor Christus in Babylon von sehr armen Eltern geb. worden und 40jährig nach Jerusalem gekommen sein, wo er eine Schule stiftete und 80jährig noch zum Haupt des Sanhedrin gemacht wurde. Seine Ansichten erhellen aus seinen im Thalmud aufbewahrten Sprüchen; seine Schule gab viel auf die mündliche Tradition u. hegte eine gelinde Ansicht hinsichtlich der Gesetzespflichten; die von H.s Schüler Schammai gestiftete that das Gegentheil; die Spaltung pflanzte sich als die zwischen Rabbaiten u. Kairiten theilweise bis heute fort.
