Jovellanos

Jovellanos, Don Gaspar Melchior de, geb. 1744 zu Gijon, span. Staatsmann und Schriftsteller, der liberalen Richtung angehörig, unter Karl III. und IV. hochgestellt, zuletzt verbannt und verhaftet; 1808 in Freiheit gesetzt, zeigte er sich als eifrigen Patrioten und bewirkte die Einsetzung einer Regentschaft sowie die Berufung der Cortes; starb 1811. Seine dramatischen Werke sind unbedeutend, wichtiger seine politischen und nationalökonomischen. (Sämmtl. Werke 2. Aufl. Barcelona 1839).
