Ure

Ure (Juhr), Andrew, ausgezeichneter engl. Chemiker, geb. 1778 zu Glasgow, wo er später als Arzt sich niederließ, seit 1805 Professor der Naturgeschichte u. Chemie an der Andersonian Institution das., seit 1830 in London. Besonders verdient durch Beobachtungen über die Elasticität und die latente Wärme der Dämpfe verschiedener Flüssigkeiten und durch Anwendung der Chemie auf das Manufakturwesen. Hauptwerk: »Dictionary of arts, manufactures and mines« 1839. Außerdem: »Dictionary of chemistry« 1824; »Philosophy of manufactures etc.« 1835; »On the cotton manufacture of Great-Britain« 1836.
