Wotton (Uatt'n), Henry, Schriftsteller u. Dichter, geb. 1568 zu Boughton-Hall in Kent, unternahm nach Vollendung seiner Studien in Oxford Reisen auf dem Festlande, wurde Secretär des Grafen Robert Essex und fand es räthlich zu fliehen, als diesem der Proceß gemacht wurde. Von Florenz aus reiste er im Auftrage des Großherzogs nach Schottland, um Jakob VI. eine Verschwörung zu entdecken; nachdem dieser engl. König geworden, erhob er den W. zum Ritter, verwandte ihn zu einigen diplomatischen Sendungen, soll ihm aber seine Gnade wegen eines Scherzes entzogen haben; W. wurde 1623 Präfect von Eaton und st. 1639. Seine Briefe an C. Scioppius, Markus Welser u.s.f. Poesien u. andere Schriften, theilweise in den reliquiae Wottonianae (Lond. 1651) enthalten, sind vergessen. Eine Sammlung von Biographien, unter welche auch die des W. aufgenommen ist, herausgegeben von Isaak Walton zu London 1670. hat bis 1827 viele Auflagen erlebt.
