Belleisle

Belleisle (Bällihl), Charles Louis August Fouquet Graf von, Marschall von Frankreich, geb. 1684, gest. 1761, trat früh in Kriegsdienst, ward 1708 Brigadier, kämpfte 1719 in Spanien, ward Marechal-de-Camp, 1731 Generallieutenant, 1733 Gouverneur von Metz, eroberte Trier und gewann in dem Frieden von 1735 durch geschickte Unterhandlungen Lothringen für Frankreich. 1741 betheiligte er sich für Bayern an der deutschen Kaiserwahl, u. kämpfte dann an der Spitze des franz. Heeres gegen Maria Theresia (sein Rückzug von Prag nach Bayern). 1746 übernahm er das Kommando in Italien, ward 1748 Herzog und Pair und Mitglied der franz. Akademie und 1753 Kriegsminister, in welcher Stellung er sich um die Organisation des franz. Heeres große Verdienste erwarb. – B., Louis Charles Armand Fouquet Graf von, Bruder des Vorigen, geb. 1693, bekannt unter dem Namen Chevalier B., diente mit Auszeichnung als Heerführer u. Diplomat unter seinem Bruder, und fiel 1746 bei einem Versuche, über die Alpen in Piemont einzudringen.
