Aesculapius

Aesculapius, bei den Griechen Asklepios, des Apollo Sohn, wurde der Heilkräfte so kundig, daß er selbst Todte erweckte, darum erschlug ihn Zeus mit dem Blitze. Er wurde göttlich verehrt, besonders in Epidaurus, Kos und Rhodus. Dargestellt wurde er sitzend, bärtigen, doch milden Gesichtes, oft mit Lorbeer bekränzt, in der Hand einen Stab, der von einer Schlange umwunden ist. Sein Dienst ist wahrscheinlich vorhellenisch oder eingewandert, wie er auch von den Griechen im 3. Jahrh. nach Rom gebracht wurde.
