Ephesus

Ephesus, die Hauptstadt in Ionien, im alten Griechenland, war der Sage nach von Amazonen erbaut worden. Hier stand der berühmte Tempel der Artemis (Diana) und eine große Menge von Prachtgebäuden. – Jener weltberühmte Tempel brannte 400 Jahre vor Christus ab, wurde mit neuem Glanze aufgebaut, von Herostrat 356 in Asche gelegt, später wieder erneuert und endlich unter Otto dem Großen völlig zerstört. Er gehörte unter die sieben Wunder der Welt; alle Bildhauer Griechenlands wetteiferten, ihn mit schönen Sculpturen zu versehen und zahlreiche Priester und Priesterinnen, welche ewige Ehelosigkeit schwören mußten, waren hier zum Dienste der Göttin angestellt.
