Franklin, Benjamin, einer der ausgezeichnetsten Männer seines Jahrhunderts, der Vertreter der Befreiung Nordamerika's vor dem übermüthigen englischen Mutterlande, der Erfinder des Blitzableiters, war 1706 in Boston geboren, folgte seiner Neigung für die Wissenschaften, trat bald als politischer Schriftsteller auf und gewann durch gemeinnützige, praktische Vorschläge und Einrichtungen Freunde und hohes Ansehen. Durch zweckmäßigste Benutzung der Zeit wurde es dem klaren, besonnenen Manne möglich, in das Studium der Naturwissenschaften so tief einzudringen, daß er über Elektricität die bedeutendsten Entdeckungen machte. Franklin's Wirksamkeit wurde immer ausgebreiteter und er ward zum Unterhändler mit dem Parlemente in London, zum Kämpfer für die Rechte und Freiheiten Pensylvaniens gewählt. Unter seiner Mitwirkung erklärten die Staaten 1776 ihre Unabhängigkeit. Nach 8jähriger Abwesenheit an den Höfen von Paris und London kehrte er zurück; sein Einzug in Philadelphia war ein Siegeszug. Franklin starb 1790. Auf Mirabeau's Veranlassung legte die französische Nationalversammlung eine dreitägige Trauer an. Seine Schriften, auch in's Deutsche übersetzt, durchwärmt die liebevollste Theilnahme an allem menschlich Guten und Schönen, und die ruhige Klarheit eines alle Verhältnisse durchdringenden Geistes.
