National Democratic Congress

Der National Democratic Congress (NDC) ist seit den Wahlen 2008 die Regierungspartei Ghanas und war vorher die wichtigste Oppositionspartei. Sie gilt als sozialdemokratisch.

Das Symbol der Partei ist ein Regenschirm in den Farben schwarz, rot, weiß und grün.

Bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2008 konnte sich John Atta-Mills in einer Stichwahl gegen seinen Kontrahenten Nana Akufo-Addo durchsetzen womit die NDC nun Regierungspartei ist.

Geschichte

Gegründet wurde der National Democratic Congress vom ehemaligen Präsidenten Ghanas Jerry Rawlings zu den Wahlen 1992 und 1996. Neben dem National Democratic Congress ist die Oppositionspartei von John Agyekum Kufuor, die New Patriotic Party, eine der beiden führenden Parteien. Der Vize-Präsident unter Rawlings, John Atta-Mills steht dem NDC vor und trat als Präsidentschaftskandidat bei den Wahlen 2000 und 2004 an, bei denen er jeweils hinter dem Amtsinhaber und amtierenden Präsidenten Ghanas unterlagt, zuletzt in einer Stichwahl. Bei den letzten Wahlen am 7. Dezember 2004 erlangte der National Democratic Congress im Rahmen der Parlamentswahlen 94 der 230 Sitze im Parlament. Politische Unterstützung bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen erhielt der NDC von den beiden Oppositionsparteien Every Ghanaian Living Everywhere (EGLE) und Democratic People's Party (DPP), um die Opposition insgesamt zu stärken.
