Die Nationaluniversität Singapur (engl. National University of Singapore; Abk. NUS) ist die älteste und größte Universität in Singapur. Sie gehört dem Hochschulverbund International Alliance of Research Universities an.

Geschichte

Die NUS wurde 1905 als Medizinhochschule unter dem Namen The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School gegründet, 1913 in King Edward VII Medical School und 1921 in King Edward VII College of Medicine umbenannt. Im Jahre 1928 wurde das Raffles College nach den Vorstellungen von Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, eine gelehrte und zivilisierte Kolonie zu schaffen, gegründet. Im Jahr 1949 verschmolz es dann mit dem King Edward VII College of Medicine zur Universität der Föderation Malaya (University of Malaya). Im Zuge der immer weiteren Unabhängigkeit Singapurs wurde diese zur Universität Singapur (University of Singapore) und schließlich 1980 durch Zusammenlegung mit der 1955 gegründeten Universität Nanyang zur Nationaluniversität Singapur (National University of Singapore).

Aktuell

Die NUS ist nun eine der führenden Universitäten in Südostasien und ist bestrebt, sich als globales Wissensunternehmen zu positionieren. Sie hat über 31.000 Studenten (2005) in 13 Fakultäten, inklusive eines Konservatoriums.

Laut dem Universitätsranking von The Times Higher Education Supplement (Oktober 2005) gehört die NUS zu den 25 besten Universitäten weltweit.
