The New York Review of Books (oder NYREV) ist ein zweiwöchentlich erscheinendes Magazin über Literatur, Kultur und Politik, das in New York herausgegeben wird. Die NYREV hält die Diskussion wichtiger Bücher selbst für eine unabdingbare literarische Aktivität. Die Auflage liegt bei über 125.000 Exemplaren.

The New York Review wurde von den gegenwärtigen Herausgebern Robert Silvers und Barbara Epstein (1928-2006) zusammen mit A. Whitney Ellsworth, dem Verleger, während des New Yorker Druckerstreiks von 1963 gegründet. Die ersten Ausgaben der Review enthielten Artikel von Autoren wie W.H. Auden, Elizabeth Hardwick, Hannah Arendt, Charles Rosen, Edmund Wilson, Susan Sontag, Robert Penn Warren, Lillian Hellman, Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Saul Bellow, Robert Lowell, Truman Capote, William Styron, und Mary McCarthy. Das Publikum kaufte praktisch die gesamte Auflage der ersten Ausgabe und tausende von Briefen wurden geschrieben, die darauf drängten das Erscheinen fortzusetzen.

In den siebziger Jahren öffnete sich die Review zeitweilig politisch radikaleren Strömungen, indem sie politische Texte von Noam Chomsky veröffentlichte.

Die Review publiziert manchmal Artikel und Sammlungen von Artikeln unter dem Imprint NYRB.
