Phrenitis

Phrenitis ist eine Diagnose aus dem Mittelalter. Die übliche Definition lautete lat.: Delirium continuum cum febre - Anhaltendes Delirium mit Fieber. Neben ein Delirium als Störung der mentalen Fähigkeiten trat ein akutes Fieber als kennzeichnendes Symptom. Ausgehend von der Fakultätenlehre war das Delirium Folge der Störung von Imaginatio und Ratiocinatio. Phrenitis war im Spätmittelalter eine gängige Diagnose bei Wahnsinnigen, wurde jedoch später nicht mehr getroffen. Heute wird Gehirnhautentzündung als Meningitis diagnostiziert.

Zur Etymologie: Das Suffix -itis bezeichnet in der medizinischen Fachsprache eine Entzündung, wie zum Beispiel oben Meningitis = Entzündung der Meningen (Gehirnhäute). Mit φρέν (phren) bezeichnete man im antiken Griechenland das Zwerchfell als Sitz der Seele (im Gegensatz zum heutigen Begriff διαφράγμα (Diaphragma), womit die für die Atmung mitentscheidende Muskelschicht zwischen Brust- und Bauchraum als physiologisches Organ gemeint ist).

Bei der Phrenitis ging man also davon aus, dass eine "Entzündung der Seele" vorliege. Diese Bezeichnung ist nach dem heutigen Stand der medizinischen Forschung nicht mehr zu halten.
