Propyl

Die Propylgruppe ist eine Atomanordnung der Organischen Chemie mit der Summenformel C3H7. Sie lässt sich gedanklich durch Abstraktion eines Wasserstoffatoms aus dem Propan ableiten und tritt in zwei isomeren Formen auf. Abstrahiert man das Wasserstoffatom von einem der endständigen, primären Kohlenstoffatome erhält man die n-Propylgruppe, die Abstraktion vom mittleren, sekundären Kohlenstoffatom ergibt die Isopropylgruppe. Die Propylgruppe liegt in der Reihe der homologen Reihe der Alkylreste zwischen der Ethylgruppe (C2H5) und der Butylgruppe (C4H9).

Die Isopropylgruppe wird aufgrund ihres moderaten sterischen Anspruchs oft in der enantioselektiven Synthese eingesetzt, da sie zwar die geforderte steuernde Wirkung ausübt, aber die Reaktivität nicht vollständig unterdrückt, wie das bei der tert-Butylgruppe oft der Fall ist. Als Beispiel seien die Evans-Auxiliare genannt, sie basieren auf der chiralen Aminosäure Isoleucin. Die Isopropylgruppe am Stereozentrum schirmt in Aldolreaktionen eine Seite des Substrats effektiv ab, sodass hohe Diastereoselektivitäten erzielt werden können.[1]

Struktur der Hünig-Base

Die sterische Hinderung wird auch bei Basen wie Lithiumdiisopropylamid (LDA) und der Hünig-Base ausgenutzt. Durch die räumliche Abschirmung sind diese Basen in der Lage nur sterisch ungehinderte Protonen zu abstrahieren, woraus eine erwünschte Selektivität generiert werden kann.[2] Des Weiteren können sie nicht als Nukleophile agieren und ihre Basizität wird durch den positiven induktiven Effekt der Isopropylgruppe erhöht.

Cyclopropylgruppe

Die Cyclopropylgruppe leitet sich in analoger Weise vom kleinsten Vertreter der Cycloalkane, dem Cyclopropan ab und besitzt die Summenformel C3H5. Sie ist daher kein Isomer der Propylgruppe.
