PuTTY ist ein von Simon Tatham entwickeltes Client-seitiges freies Secure Shell-, Telnet- und Rlogin-Programm für Microsoft Windows, Unix, Windows Mobile (inoffiziell) und Symbian OS (inoffiziell). Es dient dazu, eine Verbindung von einem Rechner zu einem Secure-Shell- bzw. Telnet-Server herzustellen. Dabei wird vor dem Verbindungsaufbau die Identität des Benutzers mittels einer der bereitgestellten Methoden zur Authentifizierung überprüft.

In der so bereitgestellten textorientierten Terminal-Sitzung können direkt Befehle abgesetzt werden, die auf dem fernen System ausgeführt werden. Eine grafische Ausgabe ist nicht möglich, jedoch kann ein X-Server genutzt werden, der auf dem Client-Rechner läuft. Zudem wird IPv6 seit der Version 0.58 und die serielle Schnittstelle seit der Version 0.59 unterstützt.

Es gibt zahlreiche PuTTY-ähnliche Programme, die entweder zusätzlich ein Benachrichtigungsfeld bieten, von einem USB-Stick ausführbar sind oder bei denen es zum Teil möglich ist, die Änderungen in eine Datei und nicht in die Windows-Registrierungsdatenbank zu speichern. PuTTY ist in WinSCP enthalten.
