Das Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) ist das australische Amt für Statistik. Es wurde am 8. Dezember 1905 als Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics (CBCS) gegründet. Man erkannt schon damals die Wichtigkeit von Statistik, sowohl als Grundlage für politische Entscheidungen als auch zu Forschungszwecken.

Im Jahr 1974 wurde aus dem CBCS das heutige Australien Bureau of Statistics.

Volkszählung

Die Behörde führt alle 5 Jahre eine Volkszählung (Australien Census of Population and Housing) durch. Die Ergebnisse der letzten Zählung, die im Jahr 2006 stattfand, wurden am 25. Oktober 2007 veröffentlicht und sind auf der ABS Homepage frei verfügbar[1].

Weitere Erhebungen

Neben der Bevölkerungsentwicklung liefert das ABS auch viele andere Statistiken. Einige der wichtigsten Kennzahlen aus dem privaten und öffentlichen Bereich werden als nationale Indikatoren (Key National Indicators)[2] veröffentlicht, darunter:

  • Verbrauch und Investitionen
  • Produktion
  • Preisentwicklung
  • Arbeitsmarkt und Demographie
  • Einkommen
  • Immobilien
