René Gerónimo Favaloro (* 12. Juli 1923 in La Plata; † 29. Juli 2000 in Buenos Aires) war ein argentinischer Herzchirurg.

Der Sohn eines Zimmermanns und einer Schneiderin aus der argentinischen Provinz arbeitete zehn Jahre lang in verschiedenen amerikanischen Einrichtungen, darunter auch die Cleveland Clinic, wo er sich auf die Thoraxchirurgie spezialisierte. Dort führte er auch im Mai 1967 bei einer 51-jährigen Patientin die erste erfolgreiche Bypass-Operation am Herzen durch. Diese Operation wird oft als erste „aortokoronare Bypassoperation“ bezeichnet,[1] obwohl es sich nach Angaben von Favaloro um die Interposition eines Venensegmentes mit zwei End-zu-End-Anastomosen gehandelt hat.[2] Erst die 15., ebenfalls 1967 durchgeführte Bypass-Operation war dann eine „aortokoronare“ mit einem Venenbypass von der Aorta zum Herzkranzgefäß.

Später kehrte Favaloro in sein Heimatland zurück, wo er unter seinem Namen eine kardiologisch-chirurgische Stiftung aufbaute. Aufgrund der im Jahr 1998 auftretenden wirtschaftlichen Krise verschuldete sich die Stiftung um mehr als 18 Millionen US-Dollar, woraufhin sich der Chirurg im Alter von 77 Jahren erschoss.[3] Seine Ehefrau Maria A. Delgado war mehrere Jahre zuvor verstorben. Die Ehe blieb kinderlos.

1987 erhielt er einen Gairdner Foundation International Award, 1998 den Prinz-Mahidol-Preis.[4]
