Rhondda

Rhondda ist ein ehemaliges Kohlerevier in Südwales mit etwa 59.900 Einwohnern. Die Kohlevorkommen wurden Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckt. Durch Eisenbahnstrecken in den Gruben und zu den Häfen (Cardiff, Barry und Port Talbot) entwickelte sich die Agrarregion schnell zu einem industriellen Zentrum und die Einwohnerzahl stieg von 542 Einwohnern im Jahr 1801 auf 113.000 im Jahr 1901. Nach dieser Zeit sank allerdings die Nachfrage von Kohle, was zur Folge hatte, dass Bergwerke geschlossen wurden, die Arbeitslosigkeit stieg und die Menschen auswanderten.
