Sir Robert Sibbald (* 15. April 1641 bei Leslie, Fife; † August 1722) war ein schottischer Arzt und Naturwissenschaftler.

Leben und Wirken

Robert Sibbald ist der Sohn von David Sibbald (um 1602–1660), einem Bruder von Sir James Sibbald († 1650), und Margaret Boyd. 1650 begann er Latein auf der Stadtschule von Cupar zu lernen, zog aber mit seinen Eltern im folgenden Jahr nach Dundee. Er begann an der Universität Edinburgh zu studieren. Im März 1660 ging er nach Holland und absolvierte an der Universität Leiden Kurse in Anatomie und Chirurgie. Hier wurde er 1661 zum Doktor der Medizin promoviert. Über Paris, Angers, wo er ein Jahr bleibt, und London kehrt er im Oktober 1662 nach Edinburgh zurück.

Gemeinsam mit Andrew Balfour (1630–1694) legte er 1670 den Botanischen Garten Edinburgh an. Sibbald gehörte zu einer Gruppe von Ärzten die sich 1681 bei Karl II. für die Gründung des Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh einsetzte.[1]

1682 verlieh ihm Jacob Stuart der Herzog von York den Ehrentitel Sir.

Durch den Earl von Perth James Drummond (1648–1716) angeregt sammelte er Material für eine geographische, statistische und naturhistorische Beschreibung Schottlands. Diese erschien 1684 unter dem Titel Scotia Illustrata. Durch Drummonds Einfluss wird er am 30. September 1682 zum „Königlichen Geograph von Schottland“ ernannt. Später wird er auch Arzt von Karl II.

Im Dezember 1684 wurde er zum Präsidenten des Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh gewählt und im März 1685 auf Beschluss der Stadt Edinburgh erster Professor für Medizin an der Universität.

1692 beschrieb Robert Sibbald als erster den Blauwal.

Ehrentaxon

Carl von Linné benannte ihm zu Ehren die Gattung Sibbaldia der Pflanzenfamilie der Rosengewächse (Rosaceae).[2][3] Sibbald hatte in Scotia Illustrata zum ersten Mal eine Pflanze dieser Gattung, den Alpen-Gelbling Sibbaldia procumbens, beschrieben.[4]
