Awasa

Awassa (auch Awasa) ist eine Stadt im Ostafrikanischen Grabenbruch in Äthiopien.

Sie liegt in der nach der Ethnie der Sidama benannten Sidama Zone, rund 200 km südlich von Addis Abeba, und ist die Hauptstadt der Region Southern Peoples, Nations & Nationalities. Der Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) zufolge hatte die Stadt im Jahr 2005 119.623 Einwohner. Sie liegt an der Straße Addis Abeba–Nairobi. An den Ufern des Awassa-Sees gelegen, ist Fischerei ein wichtiger Erwerbszweig der Stadt. Vor den Reformen der Verwaltungsgliederung war Awassa die Hauptstadt der damaligen Provinz Sidamo. Awassa verfügt mit dem Awasa Adventist College und der Debub University über zwei Hochschulen.
