Rufus (Name)

Der Name Rufus war ursprünglich ein römisches Cognomen und wurde später zu einem männlichen Vornamen. Daneben ist er auch in der biologischen Nomenklatur häufig.

Herkunft und Bedeutung

Rufus ist lateinisch „der Rote“.

Als Cognomen wurden damit in der Antike Personen benannt, die entweder durch ihre rote Haarfarbe oder ihre rötliche Hautfarbe auffielen oder beruflich mit roten Verschmutzungen (Gerber) in Kontakt kamen. Später wurde der Name jedoch nur noch für rothaarige Personen verwendet.
