Runner’s High

Runner’s High, im Deutschen auch Läuferhoch genannt, bezeichnet ein beim Langstreckenlauf sowie in Einzelfällen beim Radsport auftretendes Hochgefühl. Der Sportler erlebt idealerweise einen schmerzfreien und euphorischen Gemütszustand, der ihn die körperliche Anstrengung vergessen lässt und ihm das Gefühl gibt, „ewig“ weiterlaufen zu können.

Bei Langstreckenläufern ist dieser Zustand individuell verschieden und tritt, wenn überhaupt, erst ab einer Belastungsintensität von circa 80 Prozent der maximalen Sauerstoffaufnahme und nach einer Belastungsdauer von etwa 60 Minuten auf.

Die Euphorie wird auf die in intensiven Stresssituationen übliche Ausschüttung von Endorphinen im Gehirn zurückgeführt. Frühere Studien bei Läufern auf extremen Langstrecken zeigten dagegen eine hormonelle Adaption an die Verhältnisse. Untersuchungen an Ruderern („Rowers' High“) weisen auf eine soziale Komponente der Hormonausschüttung hin.[1][2][3]
