64-Bit

64-Bit ist ein Attribut, das vielfältig im Bereich der Computertechnik verwendet wird. Es dient dort der Abgrenzung gleichartiger Techniken mit anderer Bitzahl, meist der halben oder doppelten Bitzahl (hier 32-Bit und 128-Bit). Ohne weiteren Kontext verweist es meist auf die Ausrichtung auf eine 64-Bit-Architektur („64-Bit-Betriebssystem“, „64-Bit-PC“). 64 Bit sind mathematisch eine 64 Ziffern lange Reihe aus Einsen und Nullen.

Im Zusammenhang mit Prozessoren ist oftmals die Rede von unterschiedlichen Generationen, deren Unterschied im Wesentlichen in der Breite der Datenpfade der jeweiligen ALU liegt, wobei es mit jeder Verdoppelung 8, 16, 32 und 64 Bit breite ALUs gibt. Analog spricht man zum Beispiel von 64-Bit-Hauptprozessoren.

In der Computertechnik findet man das 64-Bit-Attribut häufig für:

  • 64-Bit-Hauptprozessor (engl. Central Processing Unit, CPU) – zur Bezeichnung der ALU-Berechnungsbreite, meist intern (nicht-segmentierte) Adressbreite
  • 64-Bit-Register – meist bei Nennung der Koprozessoren, deren Register breiter sind als die ALU-Register des Hauptprozessors
  • 64-Bit-Arbeitsspeicher (engl. Random Access Memory, RAM) – meist wie Cache die interne Organisation, seltener der Datenpfade zum RAM-Riegel
  • 64-Bit-Cacheline – Organisation des Cache in Zugriffszeilen, gibt die Mindestgröße für Transfer mit dem RAM an.
  • 64-Bit-Grafikkarte – meint hier die Datenpfade zum eigenen Grafikspeicher, gefolgt von 128-Bit- und 256-Bit-Breite
  • 64-Bit-Betriebssystem (engl. Operating System, OS) – Ausrichtung auf 64-Bit-Hauptprozessor und mehr als 4 GiB Arbeitsspeicher pro Prozess (16 EiB Adressraum)

Dabei gilt, dass nicht jedes System mit 64-bittigen Datenpfaden auch über 64-bittige Adresspfade verfügt. Diese können im Extremfall weiterhin 32-bittig bleiben (4 GiB Adressraum).
