Scribes ist ein Texteditor für Programmierer, die unter GNOME arbeiten. Scribes verwendet eine einfache Oberfläche, die den Fokus auf Benutzerfreundlichkeit legen soll. Scribes unterstützt Syntaxhervorhebung, automatische Wortvervollständigung, automatische Vervollständigung von Paarzeichen, schlaue Einzüge sowie Lesezeichen und Vorlagen.

Es ist als freie Software unter den Bedingungen der GNU General Public License (GPL) lizenziert.

Neben lokalen Dateien, die entweder über ein Menü oder per Drag and Drop im Editor geladen werden können, ist es auch möglich, auf entfernte Dateien, zum Beispiel über FTP, SFTP, SSH, Samba oder WebDAV, zuzugreifen und diese direkt auf dem entfernten Speicherplatz zu bearbeiten[1].

Scribes bietet dem Benutzer die Möglichkeit, Vorlagen zu erstellen, die mit einem vom Benutzer gewählten Auslöser im aktuellen Dokument eingefügt werden. Als Auslöser kann eine beliebige Zeichenkombination vom Benutzer gewählt werden. Wird diese Kombination eingegeben, wird sie automatisch von Scribes als Auslöser erkannt. Im Editor wird der Auslöser entsprechend markiert und mit einem Druck auf die Tabulator-Taste auf der Tastatur des Benutzers benutzt.

Die Version 0.4, welche sich aktuell noch in der Entwicklung befindet, beinhaltet unter anderen eine Überarbeitung des gesamten Programms. Es wird Entwicklern eine erweiterte Programmierschnittstelle geboten, mit welcher sich Erweiterungen noch einfacher in das Programm einbinden lassen[2].
