Die Babassupalme (Orbignya phalerata, Syn.: Orbignya barbosiana, Orbignya martiana, Orbignya oleifera, Orbignya speciosa), portugiesisch: Babaçu, ist eine Palmenart. Sie werden hauptsächlich im Nordosten Brasiliens und in Mexiko angebaut. Man schätzt ihren Bestand auf 30 Milliarden Bäume. Besonders im brasilianischen Bundesstaat Maranhão gibt es weitläufige Anbaugebiete. Der Baum wird etwa 20 Meter groß und enthält mehrere Nusstrauben die bis zu 2 Meter lang werden.

Ernte

Bis zu vier mal im Jahr können die Nüsse geerntet werden. Die Trauben wiegen bis 200 kg und enthalten 150 bis 180 Nüsse. Aus der Nuss wird Öl gewonnen, das in Deutschland bekannt geworden ist durch seine Verwendung in der Kosmetikindustrie. In Brasilien wird Babassuöl sowohl als Speiseöl als auch als Biokraftstoff verwendet. Es besteht zu 65 – 70 % aus Fetten und besitzt ähnliche chemische und physikalische Eigenschaften wie Kokosnussöl.

Bisher gibt es noch keine Erntemaschinen für die Nüsse. So leben etwa 300.000 Familien allein in Brasilien von der Ernte der Babassunüsse. Ebenso wie die Ernte, ist auch das Entkernen reine Handarbeit. In jeder Nuss stecken 4 bis 6 Fruchtkerne. Aus 60 kg Nüssen kann man 6 bis 7 Liter Öl pressen. Der Presskuchen ist ein hochwertiges Viehfutter.

Weiterer Nutzen

Aus den Schalen stellt man hochwertige Holzkohle her. Die Babassupalmwedel werden bis zu 8 Meter lang. Die Einheimischen nutzen sie zum flechten von Matten, Körben und zum decken ihrer Häuser.
