Die Balleny-Inseln sind eine über 190 km von Nordwesten nach Südosten gestreckte Gruppe unbewohnter, subantarktischer Inseln im Südlichen Ozean südlich von Neuseeland. Die Inselgruppe liegt etwa 300 Kilometer vom antarktischen Festland entfernt und ist ein Teil des Ross-Nebengebiets, des von Neuseeland beanspruchten Antarktisterritoriums.

Geografie

Die zu 95 % vergletscherten Inseln weisen eine Gesamtfläche von angenähert 800 km² und sind größtenteils vulkanischen Ursprungs. Die Inselgruppe besteht aus den drei Hauptinseln Young-Insel, Buckle-Insel und Sturge-Insel sowie zahlreichen, deutlich kleineren Eilanden und Felsen.

Der südliche Polarkreis schneidet die Inselgruppe zwischen der Young- und der Buckle-Insel in der Nähe der Borradaile-Insel. Die höchste Erhebung der Inselgruppe, der noch unbestiegene Brown Peak mit 1.524 m Höhe, befindet sich auf der Sturge-Insel. Auf zwei Inseln befinden sich kleine Notunterkünfte: „Swan Base“ auf der Borradaile-Insel und „Sabrina Refuge“ auf der Sabrina-Insel.

Geschichte

Entdeckt wurde die Inselgruppe 1839 von den Walfänger-Kapitänen John Balleny (mit dem Schiff Eliza Scott) und Thomas Freeman. Thomas Freeman betrat am 9. Februar 1839 erstmals eine der Inseln – dies war zugleich die erste Landung jenseits des südlichen Polarkreises.

Tierwelt

Auf der Buckle-Insel und der nahe gelegenen Sabrina-Insel leben mehrere Kolonien von Adélie- und Zügelpinguinen.
