The Skids

The Skids war eine schottische Punkband aus Dunfermline. Die 1977 gegründete Band, die zur ersten Welle des Punk gehörte, war die wichtigste schottische Punkband dieser Zeit, und konnte im Jahr 1979 auch die Charts erobern. Die Köpfe der Band waren Stuart Adamson und Richard Jobson, die einen Großteil des musikalischen Programms geschrieben haben. Richard Jobson war es auch, der als einziges Mitglied bis zum Ende dabei war. The Skids litten von Anfang an unter häufigem Mitgliederwechsel.

Insgesamt verbrachten sie mit verschiedenen Singles ein halbes Jahr in den UK Top 40, die Single Into the Valley ("Going into the Valley" ist Dunfermline-Slang für "es auf eine Prügelei anlegen") kam in die Top 10 und führte zu einem Auftritt bei Top of the Pops.

Die Band sollte Alice Cooper als Vorband begleiten, wurde aber nach zwei Konzerten wieder ausgeladen - angeblich weil sie in ihrem Auftreten zu seltsam waren. Bandmitglied Stuart Adamson wurde später Frontmann von Big Country.

Prominent gesamplet wurden sie in den 1990ern von den Manic Street Preachers im Song Motown Junks. 2006 wurde ihr Titel „The Saints are Coming“ von U2 und Green Day zu Gunsten der Opfer des Hurrikans Katrina gecovert. Ein weiteres Cover dieses Liedes entstand 2008 von der Gruppe Von Thronstahl.

Stuart Adamson beging am 16. Dezember 2001 in einem Hotelzimmer in Honolulu Selbstmord.
