Thousand-Island-Dressing ist eine klassische Salatsauce der US-amerikanischen Küche aus Mayonnaise, Ketchup oder Tomatenmark und fein gehackten roten und grünen Paprikaschoten. Gewürzt wird sie mit Paprikapulver und Chilisauce (z. B. Tabasco). Ergänzt werden kann sie u. a. durch gehackte Pickles, Zwiebeln, Oliven, hartgekochte Eier.

In der US-amerikanischen Küche wird das Dressing auch zu Burgern serviert.

Geschichte

Das Thousand-Island-Dressing ist in den USA seit 1912 schriftlich belegt. Zur Entstehung gibt es unterschiedliche Berichte.[1] So habe einigen Quellen zufolge George C. Boldt, der Erbauer des Boldt Castle, das Dressing erfunden. Er machte die Salatsauce jedoch lediglich durch die Aufnahme in die Speisenkarte des Waldorf-Astoria-Hotels in Chicago einem breiten Publikum bekannt und berühmt.

Als Erfinderin des Thousand-Island-Dressing darf mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit Sophia LaLonde aus Clayton im Bundesstaat New York gelten. Der Name bezieht sich auf die Region Thousand Islands, in der die Sauce zuerst in einem Hotel angeboten worden sein soll.[2]
