Baqqara

Baggara, auch Baqqâra, heißt auf arabisch „Kuh“-Hirten, meint jedoch in anderen Sprachen meist die im Sudan und dem Tschad und in geringem Maße auch in anderen Sahel-Ländern nomadisierenden arabischsprachigen Rinder-Nomaden.

Die Baggara gehen zumindest teilweise auf Kamel-Nomaden zurück, die, als sie von Norden kommend in feuchtere Gebiete vorstießen, die Kamelzucht zugunsten der Rinderzucht aufgaben. In ihrem heutigen Verbreitungsgebiet haben sie auch andere rinderzüchtende Nomaden in ihre Volksgruppe assimiliert, darunter Teile der Fur.

Die Baggara unterteilen sich in mehrere Stämme, die für ihre Identität wichtiger sind als ihre Identität als Baggara. Sie sind traditionell als Sklavenhändler bekannt, die ackerbautreibende Völker weiter im Süden überfallen. Die Baggara sind sunnitische Muslime.

Die Baggara von Darfur und Kordofan waren die wichtigsten Anhänger des Mahdi im Mahdi-Aufstand von 1881 bis 1899.

Die wichtige zweite Sure des Korans heißt al-Baqara (die Kuh), schreibt sich jedoch nur mit einem Q.
