Bar Harbor ist eine Hafenstadt im Hancock County von Maine, USA.

Bar Harbor wurde 1796 gegründet. Zuerst hieß die Stadt „Eden“; erst am 3. März 1918 wurde sie in „Bar Harbor“ umbenannt. Im Sommer ist Bar Harbor ein beliebter Erholungsort der Oberklasse von Maine.

Bar Harbor grenzt an den Acadia-Nationalpark.

Bar Harbor war einst ein beliebtes Feriendomizil reicher amerikanischer Familien wie den Rockefellers und Astors. Auch die Pionierin der Sozialarbeit Jane Addams hielt sich hier des Öfteren auf. 1947 zerstörte ein Feuer große Teile der Stadt – auch die Villen dieser Familien.

Seit 1998 betreibt die Fährfirma Bay Ferries Limited eine Verbindung von Bar Harbor nach Yarmouth (Nova Scotia). Der Hochgeschwindigkeitskatamaran „The Cat“ bewältigt die Strecke (bei normalen Witterungsbedingungen) in 2,5 Stunden.

In Bar Harbor ist zudem der Hauptsitz des Jackson Laboratory, eines weltweit als führend geltendes Institut für die Erforschung menschlicher Krankheiten mit der Hausmaus als Modellorganismus.

Söhne und Töchter der Stadt

Bar Harbor ist die Geburtsstadt des ehemaligen Vizepräsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten und Gouverneurs von New York Nelson A. Rockefeller sowie vom Garry Davis, einem Friedensaktivisten und Initiator der Weltbürgerbewegung.
