Barclays Bank PLC ist ein international agierendes Finanzunternehmen aus Großbritannien. Seine Aktien sind an der London Stock Exchange und an der Börse von Tokio gelistet; sie sind im FTSE 100 Index enthalten. Barclays ist die drittgrößte Bank in Großbritannien. Sie beschäftigt annähernd 149.000 Mitarbeiter (2008) weltweit.

Die Bank hat ihren Hauptsitz am Churchill Place in Canary Wharf, in den Docklands von London (zuvor bis Mai 2005 an der Lombard Street in der Innenstadt von London). Der Sitz von Barclays in den USA befindet sich an der Park Avenue in New York.

Historisches

Die Firmengeschichte geht zurück bis 1690 in London, wo sie von Quäkern gegründet wurde.[2] Der Name „Barclay“ entstand erstmals 1736. Zu ihrem Reichtum kam sie während der Zeit des Kolonialismus.

Trivia

Der erste Geldautomat der Welt wurde 1967 von der Barclays-Filiale in Enfield (heute ein Stadtbezirk von Greater London) aufgestellt.

Barclays hält die Namensrechte an der ersten englischen Fußballliga: „Barclays Premier League“.

Entwicklung

Im Rahmen der Finanzkrise hat Barclays Anfang Oktober 2008 eine Finanzspritze von 6,5 Milliarden Pfund, davon 2,0 Milliarden Pfund von der britischen Regierung und 4,5 Milliarden Pfund von institutionellen Anlegern bekommen. [3] Davon wiederum 3,5 Milliarden Pfund von der International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), einem Staatsfonds aus dem Emirat Abu Dhabi. IPIC kann dieses Darlehen nunmehr in einen Aktienanteil von bis zu 16,3 Prozent an Barclays umwandeln. [4]
