Ein Baseballcap (kurz Cap oder Kappe, Basecap, auch Baseballkappe) ist eine Mütze mit Sonnenblende, welche ursprünglich vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten und unter Jugendlichen getragen wird. Sie hat ihren Ursprung als Kopfbedeckung von Baseball-Spielern, ist aber mittlerweile allgemein Teil der Freizeitbekleidung.

Populär wurde das Baseballcap angeblich dadurch, dass am 24. April 1849 die Spieler des Baseballclubs New York Knicks [1] bei einem Spiel in New Jersey anstatt der damals üblichen Strohhüte steife Kappen trugen, die “hemispherical hats” genannt wurden und zunächst noch keinen Schirm hatten.[2]

Baseballcaps sind in der Regel aus Leinen, Baumwolle oder Wolle gefertigt, auf der Vorderseite versteift und besitzen statt einer Hutkrempe vorne einen versteiften Schild, der wie bei einer Schirmmütze als Sonnenschutz und darüber hinaus als Stoßschutz dient.

In Deutschland wurde die Baseballmütze erstmals in den 1970er Jahren unter Jugendlichen beliebt. Ab Anfang der 1980er Jahre kam, zunächst von amerikanischen Skateboardern ausgehend die Mode auf, die Mütze mit dem Schirm nach hinten zu tragen. Verschiedene Jugendszenen übernahmen daraufhin dieses Erscheinungsbild. Studien des Ig-Nobelpreis-Trägers John Trinkaus ergaben Mitte der 1990er Jahre, dass zwischen 10% und 40% der beobachteten Studenten ihre Baseballcaps verkehrt herum trugen.[3][4][5]

Mitte der 1990er Jahren nahm die sehr preiswert herzustellende Baseballmütze nach amerikanischen Vorbild ihren Einzug in die deutschsprachige Uniformmode. Sie verdrängte bis heute neben dem Barett bei vielen Behörden sowie staatlichen und zivilen Organisationen und Vereinen die bis dahin bevorzugte Berg- beziehungsweise Arbeitsmütze und andere traditionelle Kopfbedeckungen.
