Der Strichcode Universal Product Code, kurz UPC, wurde 1973 in den USA eingeführt. Durch ihn erhalten Produkte einen Nummerncode, den Barcodescanner berührungslos auslesen.

Drei Jahre später folgte die European Article Number (EAN). Die EAN ist kompatibel zum Universal Product Code, kodiert aber ein Zeichen mehr. In den USA und Kanada bleibt der UPC zur Zeit noch die einzige Kodierung, die vom gesamten Markt akzeptiert wird. Stellt man dem UPC eine führende Null voran, kann die Zahlenkette als gültige 13-stellige EAN benutzt werden. Viele international tätige Unternehmen benutzen deshalb im Konsumgüterbereich nur den UPC-Code.

Über die ersten sechs Stellen des UPC A Code (auch GTIN 12 genannt) kann man ein Produkt eindeutig einem Hersteller oder Händler zuordnen. Die Stellen 7 bis 11 kann der Besitzer des Nummernkreises auf seine Produkte verteilen. Die 12. Stelle ist eine Prüfziffer, die nach Modulo 10 mit der Gewichtung 3 berechnet wird.

Unternehmen können UPC-Nummernkreise beim Uniform Code Council gegen Gebühr erwerben.

Die Kodierung eines UPC ist identisch mit der Kodierung einer EAN mit führender Null.
