V-E-Day steht als Abkürzung für Victory in Europe Day (engl. wortwörtlich: „Sieg-in-Europa-Tag“) und bezeichnet den 8. Mai 1945 als Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges in Europa. In Deutschland wird das Datum meist als Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges beziehungsweise Kriegsende bezeichnet, obwohl dies begrifflich falsch ist, da der Zweite Weltkrieg erst am 2. September 1945 mit der Kapitulation Japans endete. In vielen europäischen Ländern wird er als Tag des Sieges bzw. als Tag der Befreiung gefeiert. In einigen Ländern wie Frankreich, Tschechien und der Slowakei ist er öffentlicher Feiertag.

In den Verhandlungen mit den Alliierten am 6. und 7. Mai wurde der 8. Mai als Zeitpunkt des Inkrafttretens der bedingungslosen Kapitulation der deutschen Streitkräfte festgesetzt. Die Gegenzeichnung der Kapitulationserklärung durch die Oberbefehlshaber der Teilstreitkräfte der Wehrmacht zog sich bis in die frühen Morgenstunden des 9. Mai hin. Da die Kapitulation in Moskau ebenfalls erst am 9. Mai bekannt gegeben wurde, wird in der Sowjetunion und ihren Nachfolgestaaten der 9. Mai als Tag des Sieges begangen.

In der DDR war der 8. Mai als Tag der Befreiung von 1950 bis 1966, 1975 und 1985 ein gesetzlicher Feiertag.

In den Niederlanden heißt dieser Tag Bevrijdingsdag und wird am 5. Mai gefeiert, denn bereits am 5. Mai 1945 um 7:00 Uhr trat eine Teilkapitulation der Wehrmachtseinheiten, die im Nordwesten Deutschlands gegen den britischen Feldmarschall Montgomery gekämpft hatten, in Kraft.

Für das Ende der Kampfhandlungen gegen Japan nach dessen bedingungsloser Kapitulation wurde die Abkürzung V-J-Day geprägt.
