Wallace Hume Carothers (* 27. April 1896 in Burlington, Iowa; † 29. April 1937 in Wilmington) war ein US-amerikanischer Chemiker, der das Nylon erfand und nach dem die Carothers-Gleichung benannt ist.

Er war das älteste von vier Kindern eines Lehrers. Seine akademische Karriere begann er 1924 als Fakultätsmitglied an der Universität von Illinois. 1926 wechselte er zur Harvard University. 1928 errichtete die Firma DuPont ein Forschungslabor zur Entwicklung von künstlichen Materialien und Kunststoffen und Carothers wurde als Forschungsleiter eingestellt. 1929 wurde er als erster Industrie-Chemiker in die US-Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt. Im April 1930 entdeckte sein Team das Neopren, ein synthetisches Gummi, und synthetisierte das erste Polyester. 1934 führten Versuche mit Polyamiden zum Nylon. Zur Namensgebung des Nylons existiert die Legende, dass Carothers erkannt haben soll, dass die hervorragenden Fasereigenschaften des von ihm entdeckten Polyamids das japanische Seidenmonopol bedrohen könnte. Aus seinem Ausruf "Now, you lousy old nipponese" soll das Wort Nylon gebildet worden sein.

Carothers, von dem man glaubte, er sei manisch-depressiv, beging 1937 Selbstmord, indem er Zyankali einnahm.

Carothers war begeisterter Leser von Poesie und Liebhaber klassischer Musik.
