William Edward Ayrton

William Edward Ayrton (* 14. September 1847 in London; † 8. November 1908 ebendort) war ein britischer Physiker.

Leben und Wirken

Ayrton studierte in London und ging dann nach Indien, wo er in der Telegraphenverwaltung angestellt war. Von 1873 bis 1879 war er Professor für Physik und Telegraphie an der kaiserlichen Ingenieurschule in Tokio. 1879 kehrte Ayrton wieder nach England zurück und wurde als Professor der Physik am City and Guilds of London Institute angestellt. 1881 wurde er zum Mitglied der Royal Society gewählt; 1901 wurde ihm die Royal Medal der Royal Society verliehen.

Ayrton arbeitete lange mit John Perry zusammen und beschäftigte sich insbesondere mit der Konstruktion von Messinstrumenten, mit der Verbesserung von Dynamomaschinen, mit elektrischen Eisenbahnen und anderen elektrotechnischen Gebieten.

1885 heiratete er Hertha Marks Ayrton, die ihn in seiner Arbeit unterstützte und 1906 eine der Medals der Royal Society erhielt.
