Besonderheiten Höchster Berg Taiwans

Der Yu Shan (chinesisch 玉山 Yù Shān, W.-G. Yü Shan ‚Jadeberg‘) ist mit 3.952 m Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel der höchste Berg Taiwans. Er liegt in Zentraltaiwan am Schnittpunkt der Landkreise Nantou, Kaohsiung und Chiayi. Rund zehn Kilometer südlich des Gipfels verläuft der nördliche Wendekreis.

Geschichte

Im Westen hieß der Berg Mount Morrison nach dem Kapitän des Frachters USS Alexander, W. Morrison, welcher den Yu Shan 1857 erstmals schriftlich erwähnte. Während der von 1895 bis 1945 andauernden japanischen Herrschaft über die Insel wurde er Niitakayama (jap. 新高山, dt. „neuer, hoher Berg“) genannt. Mit den Worten: „Ersteigt den Berg Niitaka“ startete Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku am 2. Dezember 1941 die Angriffsoperation auf Pearl Harbor.

Yushan-Nationalpark

Der Yu Shan ist eingebettet in den 1985 eingerichteten nach ihm benannten Yushan-Nationalpark. Dieser ist mit einer Fläche von 1054,9 km² der größte der fünf Nationalparks auf Taiwan und erstreckt sich über die vier Landkreise Nantou, Hualien, Kaohsiung und Chiayi.
