Caprolactam, genauer ε-Caprolactam, ist der Ausgangsstoff für die ringöffnende Polymerisation von Polyamid 6 (Perlon). Eine zweite Möglichkeit zur Polymerisation besteht in der hydrolytischen Spaltung der Amid-Bindung und anschließender Polykondensation. Polyamid 6 wird jährlich im Megatonnen-Maßstab produziert.

Herstellung von Caprolactam

Aus Cyclohexanon wird durch Umsetzung mit dem Hydrogensulfat oder dem Hydrochlorid des Hydroxylamins zunächst Cyclohexanonoxim hergestellt. Dieses wird durch eine Beckmann-Umlagerung in ε-Caprolactam umgewandelt. Hierbei wird häufig konzentrierte Schwefelsäure als Katalysator eingesetzt.

Eigenschaften von Caprolactam

Bei Raumtemperatur bildet ε-Caprolactam weiße Kristalle, die gut in Wasser löslich und hygroskopisch sind. Caprolactam wird daher bis zur Verwendung üblicherweise bei Temperaturen über 80 °C gelagert. Beim stärkeren Erhitzen von Caprolactam zersetzt sich dieses unter Bildung von u. a. Ammoniak und Stickoxiden.

Herstellung von Polyamid 6

Das auch unter dem Handelsnamen Perlon bekannte Polyamid 6 entsteht durch ringöffnende Polymerisation von ε-Caprolactam. Die zum Kettenstart benötigte ω-Aminocapronsäure wird aus der hydrolytischen Ringöffnung von ε-Caprolactam gewonnen.

Diese reagiert zusammen mit Caprolactam zu Polycaprolactam oder Polyamid 6.
