Bits per Inch

Die Aufzeichnungsdichte, auch Datendichte oder Datenaufzeichnungsdichte genannt, ist ein Maß für die Anzahl der Daten pro Flächeneinheit oder Längeneinheit, die auf einem Datenträger gespeichert werden kann. Bei Magnetbändern wird als Maßeinheit meistens BPI (Bits per Inch = Bits pro Zoll) oder FCI (Flux Changes per Inch = Flusswechsel pro Zoll) benutzt, bei Festplatten Bits pro Quadratzoll [1].

Vor allem im Zusammenhang mit Disketten, aber auch Magnetbändern werden die Begriffe Einfache Dichte, Doppelte Dichte, Vierfache Dichte, Hohe Dichte und Erweiterte Dichte bzw. die englischen Pendants Single Density (SD), Double Density (DD), Quadruple Density (QD), High Density (HD) und Extended Density (ED) benutzt. Diese bezeichnen das Verhältnis der Aufzeichnungsdichte zu einer Standarddichte.

Die Aufzeichnungsdichte hängt bei magnetischen Datenträgern unter anderem davon ab, mit welchem Material das Speichermedium beschichtet ist. Je höher die Aufzeichnungsdichte ist, desto größer ist die Speicherkapazität.
