Boriquén

Puerto-Ricaner bezeichnen sich selbst stolz als Boricua, frei nach Boriqueño (veraltet), um dem Erbe der früheren Bewohner, der Taíno, der Insel ihre Anerkennung zu zeigen. Beide Wörter entspringen dem Wort der Taíno Boriken (auch Boriquén, Borinquen oder Borinquén). Das Wort Boriken (deutsch: „Das großartige Land des tapferen und noblen Lords“)[1], wurde von der Taíno-indianischen Bevölkerung vor der Ankunft der Spanier genutzt, um die puertoricanische Insel zu bezeichnen. Die Benutzung des Wortes Boricua wurde auf der Insel und im Ausland durch die Benutzung des Satzes „Yo soy Boricua“ („Ich bin ein Boricua“, oder „Ich bin ein Puertoricaner“), um sich selbst als Puertoricaner zu zeigen, von den Puertoricanern populär gemacht. Eine andere Variante, die auch weitverbreitet ist, ist Borincano, was übersetzt „aus Borinquen“ bedeutet.
