Bourke ist eine Stadt im Norden von New South Wales in Australien. Die Stadt liegt etwa 800 Kilometer nordwestlich von Sydney am Südufer des Darling River, den zwei Brücken im Norden der Stadt überqueren. Bourke kann über den Mitchell Highway und über den Flughafen Bourke erreicht werden.

Im Ort leben etwa 2500 Personen, davon sind etwa ein Drittel Aborigines.

Geschichte

Bourke wurde von britischen Siedlern in den 1820er Jahren besiedelt. Der Ort hieß ursprünglich Prattenville und wurde später nach dem Gouverneur Richard Bourke von New South Wales in den 1830er Jahren benannt. Da der Ort früher von Karawanen der Kamele in Australien versorgt wurde, gibt es einen Friedhof der Kamelführer aus dem indischen Kontinent mit einem historischen Bethaus.

Ursprünglich hatte Bourke einen bedeutenden Hafen für den Abtransport von Wolle der in der Umgebung gezüchteten Schafe. Der Hafen am Fluss wurde aufgegeben, nachdem Bourke im Jahre 1886 an das Eisenbahnnetz angeschlossen wurde. Der Eisenbahnbetrieb wurde im Jahre 1990 eingestellt. Der ehemalige Bahnhof beherbergt heute ein Touristen-Informationzentrum.

Wirtschaft

Die Landschaft rund um Bourke wird durch die Schafzucht sowie von einigen Obst- und Baumwoll-Pflanzen in der Nähe des Darling Rivers geprägt. In der Gegend herrschte 2005-2008 eine große Trockenheit, die die Existenz der Landwirtschaft gefährdete.

Bourke investiert in den Jahren 2008/09 in den alten Hafen, um die Wirtschaft wieder zu beleben, und will den Tourismus mit Dampfschiffen attraktiv machen.
