James Brady (* 29. August 1940 in Centralia, Illinois) ist eine US-amerikanische Symbolfigur für die Kontrolle von Handfeuerwaffen. Er war Berater und Pressesprecher des US-Präsidenten Ronald Reagan und wurde am 30. März 1981 bei einem Anschlag auf den Präsidenten durch den Attentäter John Hinckley junior schwer verletzt und erlitt dauerhafte Hirnschäden und Lähmungen.

Nach dem Attentat engagierte sich seine Frau Sarah Brady für die Kontrolle von Schusswaffen, auf sie geht das nach ihrem Mann benannte Gesetz Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (auch bekannt als: Brady Bill) aus dem Jahr 1993 zurück, nach dem sich Käufer von Handfeuerwaffen in lizenzierten Waffengeschäften einer Überprüfung durch eine Datenbank des FBI auf Vorstrafen unterziehen müssen. Für Käufer außerhalb von Waffengeschäften ist eine Wartezeit von fünf Tagen vorgeschrieben. Für Langwaffen gelten geringere Anforderungen.

Sarah Brady gründete das Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, das formal von beiden Eheleuten gleichberechtigt geleitet wird. James Brady wurde 1996 von Präsident Bill Clinton die Presidential Medal of Freedom verliehen. Im Jahr 2000 wurde der Saal für Pressekonferenzen im Weißen Haus in James S. Brady Briefing Room umbenannt.
