Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1739 an Brabazon Ponsonby, 2. Viscount Duncannon, verliehen.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Vater des ersten Earls William Ponsonby, ebenfalls ein bekannter irischer Politiker, war 1721 zum Baron Bessborough, of Bessborough, Piltown in the County of Kilkenny, und 1723 zum Viscount Duncannon, of the Fort of Duncannon in the County of Wexford, erhoben worden.

Der erste Earl erhielt 1749 die Würde eines Baron Ponsonby of Sysonby, in the County of Leicester, in the Peerage of Great Britain, verliehen.
