Das Camping World 300 ist traditionell das erste Saisonrennen der NASCAR Nationwide Series und wird auf dem Daytona International Speedway ausgetragen. Es findet einen Tag vor dem Daytona 500 statt und gilt als das prestigeträchtigste Rennen im gesamten Rennkalender der Nationwide Series. Bis zur Saison 2002 war es das einzige Rennen der Serie, welches auf dem Daytona International Speedway ausgetragen wurde.

Das Rennen geht zurück auf jenes auf dem Daytona Beach Road Course während der Saison 1948 der sogenannten „Modified Series“. Zwischen 1950 und 1958 war es teil der Modified beziehungsweise Sportman Series, die auf dem Strandkurs in Daytona Beach ausgetragen wurden. Es fand immer am Freitag oder Samstag vor dem Rennen der Grand National Series auf dem Kurs statt.

Zur Saison 1959 wechselte das Rennen auf den neu errichteten, 2,5 Meilen langen Daytona International Speedway. Als Renntermin wurde der Tag vor dem Daytona 500 angesetzt, die Renndistanz betrug entweder 200 oder 250 Meilen. Im Jahre 1966 hieß das Rennen Permatex 300 und es wurde das zweite von NASCAR sanktionierte Rennen, welches nach einem Sponsor benannt wurde. 1968 wurde es von der Modified Division in die neu organisierte Late Model Sportsman Division übertragen, der heutigen Nationwide Series.

In den 1970er und frühen 1980er Jahren wurde des Rennen oftmals von den lokalen Medien verspottet, da regelmäßig größere Unfälle und Massencrashs passierten. Für viele dieser Unfälle wurde die geringer Erfahrung einiger Fahrer und das ältere Equipment verantwortlich gemacht.
