Abhay Ashtekar

Abhay Vasant Ashtekar (* 5. Juli 1949 in Indien) ist ein theoretischer Physiker, der sich mit Gravitationsphysik beschäftigt.

Ashtekar wurde 1974 an der University of Chicago promoviert. 1983 bis 1985 war er Professor an der Universität Paris VI und ab 1984 Professor an der Syracuse University. Ab 1993 war er Eberly Professor für Physik an der Pennsylvania State University und Direktor des Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos. Er war u.a. Gastprofessor und Gastwissenschaftler an verschiedenen indischen Universitäten (wie dem Raman Institut in Bangalore), Utrecht, der University of Maryland, dem Max-Planck Institut für Physik und Astrophysik in Garching und in Peking.

Abhay Ashketar ist Mitbegründer der Theorie der Schleifenquantengravitation. Von ihm stammt das kosmologische Modell des Quantum Bounce.

1977 erhielt er den ersten Preis der Gravity Research Foundation. 1981 bis 1985 war er Sloan Fellow. 1996 wurde Ehrenmitglied der indischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und 1997 auswärtiges Mitglied der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften von Indien. Er ist Ehrendoktor der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (2005). 2004 erhielt er den Senior Scientist Preis der Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. 2007 bis 2010 war er Präsident der International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation.
