Gallery Weekend

Das Gallery Weekend ist eine Kunstveranstaltung in Berlin. Sie wurde im Jahr 2004 als eine private Initiative von Berliner Galerien gegründet und hat sich „als das führende deutsche Kunstmarkt-Ereignis für zeitgenössische Kunst etabliert“.[1]

Konzept

Die am Gallery Weekend beteiligten Galerien öffnen am Wochenende vor dem 1. Mai ihre Tore und laden Kunstsammler, Kuratoren und Kunstinteressierte ein, die Ausstellungen zu besuchen. Gezeigt werden Werke namhafter Künstler, etwa des chinesischen Konzeptkünstlers und Menschenrechtlers Ai Weiwei[2] oder des Schweizer Malers Jean Tinguely.

Das Gallery Weekend soll eine Alternative zur traditionellen Kunstmesse sein, bei dem „die Besucher in einem exklusiven Rundgang durch die ganze Stadt verteilt empfangen“[3] werden. Daneben gibt es ein Rahmenprogramm mit Sonderführungen sowie eine Betreuung für VIP-Gäste. Den Auftakt bildet ein Dinner am Sonnabend. 2010 wurde hierfür das Bode-Museum ausgewählt, während im Jahr 2011 die Station Berlin, ein ehemaliger Postgüterbahnhof für den Paketverkehr zwischen der DDR und Westdeutschland, ausgewählt wurde.

Im Jahr 2011 wurde mit 44 teilnehmenden Galerien ein vorläufiger Höchststand erreicht.[4]

Das Konzept wurde bereits für eine ähnlich strukturierte Veranstaltung in New York übernommen.[5]
