Die Haynes-Apperson Company war ein US-amerikanischer Automobilhersteller, der von 1896 bis 1904 in Kokomo (Indiana) ansässig war. Diese Firma war der erste Automobilhersteller in Indiana und einer der ersten in den USA. Elwood Haynes, einer der Gründer, erfand den rostfreien Stahl und das Stellite und die Firma zeichnete für viele Erfindungen der frühen Automobilgeschichte verantwortlich.

Geschichte

Haynes-Apperson (1894)

Die Gesellschaft wurde von Elwood Haynes und den Brüdern Elmer und Edgar Apperson gegründet. 1894 baute das Trio eines der ersten benzingetriebenen Automobile der USA in den Riverside Machine Works der Gebrüder Apperson[1].Ab 1898 stellte die Firma alle 2-3 Wochen ein neues Auto her und verkaufte sie anfangs für US-$ 2.000,--. Ende dieses Jahres zog die Firma in eine neue Fabrik um und es gab zwei neue Modelle. Sie stellte mehr Leute ein und jedes Jahr erschienen ein 2-3 neue Modelle. Von da ab nahm das Geschäft stark zu: Wurden 1898 noch 5 Autos gebaut, so waren es 1899 schon 30, 192 im Jahre 1900 und 1901 wurden 240 Exemplare gebaut. Die Produktionssteigerungen verlangten eine Fertigung rund um die Uhr in zwei Schichten.

Haynes-Apperson-Automobile waren für ihre Langstreckentauglichkeit bekannt. Die Gesellschaft meldete ihre Wagen regelmäßig bei Zuverlässigkeitsfahrten. Das letzte von dieser Firma gebaute Auto besaß ein Dreiganggetriebe und Luftreifen und konnte eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 38,6 km/h erreichen. 1902 hatten die Eigner einen großen Profit aus der Firma erwirtschaftet und beschlossen, sich zu trennen und ihre eigenen Firmen zu günden. Die Apperson Brothers Automobile Company wurde noch im gleichen Jahr gegründet und 1904 wurde die Haynes-Apperson Company in Haynes Automobile Company umbenannt.

Automobile

Das Haynes-Apperson Light Car von 1904 war ein Runabout für zwei Personen und kostete US-$ 1.550,--. Der horizontal eingebaute Zweizylinder-Boxermotor war hinten eingebaut und lieferte 11 bhp (8,1 kW). Angeschlossen war ein Dreiganggetriebe und der Wagen hatte einen Rahmen aus Winkeleisen. Der Haynes-Apperson Tonneau hatte einen ähnlichen Boxermotor, der 17 bhp (12,5 kW) abgab, vorne eingebaut war und ebenfalls mit einem Dreiganggetriebe verbunden wurde. Der Wagen, der ebenfalls über einen Winkeleisenrahmen verfügte, wog 1.043 kg, bot fünf Sitzplätze und kostete US-$ 2.500,--.

Ein Haynes-Apperson aus dem Jahre 1894 ist in der ständigen Sammlung des National Museum of American History der Smithsonian Institution.

Sponsorentätigkeit

Jedes Jahr seit 1977 sponserte Haynes-Apperson einen Lauf in Kokomo. Die Streckenlänge variierte von 4 Meilen (6,4 km) bis zu der eines Halbmarathons, für Läufer und für Geher. 2008 (im 31. Jahr der Austragung) gab es 209 Läufer, 89 Geher und 73 Teilnehmer am 1-Meilen-Spaßrennen, als insgesamt 371 Teilnehmer. Damit ist es das größte Rennen im Umkreis von 80 km um Kokomo.
