Hilary Mary Mantel CBE (* 6. Juli 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire) ist eine englische Schriftstellerin.

2009 erhielt ihr Roman Wolf Hall mit dem Booker Prize den wichtigsten Literaturpreis für ein englischsprachiges Werk.

Hilary Mantels Familie hat ihren Ursprung in Irland, aber ihre Eltern, Margaret und Henry Thompson, sind Engländer. Mit elf Jahren nahm Mantel den Namen ihres Großvaters, Jack Mantel, an. Der Familienhintergrund ist die Antriebsfeder ihrer meisten Romane.

Mantel studierte Rechtswissenschaft an der University of Sheffield und machte dort 1973 ihren Bachelor. 1974 begann sie mit dem Schreiben. Der Roman wurde 1992 mit dem Titel A Place of Greater Safety veröffentlicht.

Ab 1977 lebte sie mit ihrem Ehemann Gerald McEwen, den sie 1972 heiratete, in Botswana, danach vier Jahre in Dschidda.
