Joseph Powathil (* 14. August 1930 in Kalikavu) ist Alterzbischof von Changanacherry.

Leben

Joseph Powathil empfing am 3. Oktober 1962 die Priesterweihe und wurde in den Klerus der Erzeparchie Changanacherry inkardiniert. Paul VI. ernannte ihn am 7. Januar 1972 zum Weihbischof in Changanacherry und Titularbischof von Caesarea Philippi.

Der Papst persönlich weihte ihn am 13. Februar desselben Jahres zum Bischof; Mitkonsekratoren waren Bernard Jan Kardinal Alfrink, Erzbischof von Utrecht und Militärvikar der Niederlande, und William John Kardinal Conway, Erzbischof von Armagh.

Am 26. Februar 1977 wurde er zum Bischof von Kanjirapally ernannt. Johannes Paul II. ernannte ihn am 5. November 1985 zum Erzbischof von Changanacherry. Am 22. Januar 2007 nahm Benedikt XVI. seinen altersbedingten Rücktritt an.
