Das Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) ist eine seit ungefähr 2003 bestehende neue Flugzeugklasse in den Vereinigten Staaten. Entgegen existierenden Regelwerken zur Zulassung von Flugzeugen ist für die LSA-Klasse ASTM regeldefinierend. Das grobe Regelwerk dieser Klasse sieht eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit bei maximaler Motorleistung von 120 kts (222 km/h) und ein maximales Abfluggewicht von 1320 lbs (600 kg) vor. Weitere Eckpunkte der Klasse sind ein Kolbentriebwerk, keine Druckkabine, Propeller mit festem Einstellwinkel, maximal zwei Sitzplätze und festes Fahrwerk.

Das Regelwerk wurde 2009 weitgehend durch die Europäische Agentur für Flugsicherheit im Rahmen der vereinheitlichten Zulassungsregeln für leichte Flugzeuge (European Light Aviation 1, ELA 1) übernommen, die im Zulassungsstandard CS-LSA münden sollen.[1][2] Derzeit fliegen bereits diverse Muster unter vorläufiger Zulassung auf Permit-to-fly.

Die LSA-Klasse dient dazu, leistungsfähigeren Mustern der UL-Klassen einen sinnvolleren Einsatzzweck zu geben und das verbreitete 450 kg Maximalgewicht der ULs zu erhöhen und gleichzeitig ein praxisorientiertes Zulassungsverfahren unter mehr Eigenverantwortung des Piloten zu erlauben.
