Die Chelsea Flower Show ist eine jährliche Ausstellung zum Gartenbau in London. Sie wird von der Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) veranstaltet und findet in jedem Jahr an fünf Tagen im Mai im Royal Hospital im Londoner Stadtteil Chelsea statt. Sie gilt als eine der berühmtesten Ausstellungen dieser Art im Vereinigten Königreich mit internationaler Bedeutung und ist ein gesellschaftliches Ereignis.

Geschichte

Die erste RHS Show wurde im Jahre 1852 in Kensington, London, veranstaltet. Seit dem Jahr 1913 findet die Chelsea Flower Show nahezu jährlich im Royal Hospital Chelsea statt.

Inhalt

Die ersten beiden Ausstellungstage, Dienstag und Mittwoch, sind den Mitgliedern der Royal Horticultural Society vorbehalten, für die übrigen Tage sind auch andere Besucher zugelassen, wobei die Tickets immer vorbestellt werden müssen, da die Ticketanzahl auf 157.000 Stück beschränkt ist. Traditionell besucht Queen Elizabeth II. am Eröffnungstag (Dienstag) in Begleitung des Präsidenten der RHS und weiteren Mitgliedern der königlichen Familie die Ausstellung.

Neben der Ausstellung von Gartenprodukten aller Art, z. B. Werkzeugen oder dekorativen Gartenelementen, werden auch Pflanzenneuheiten in einem speziellen Ausstellungszelt sowie 20 Schaugärten präsentiert. Es finden Auszeichnungen in verschiedenen Ehrenkategorien statt, diese werden als Medaillen in Gold, Silber-Gold, Silber und Bronze verliehen.

Im Rahmen der Gartenschau werden auch Fragen zu Pflanzen und ihren Pflanzenkrankheiten von den Mitgliedern der RHS beantwortet.

Bedeutung

Die Ausstellungen im Rahmen dieser Gartenschau sind von internationaler Bedeutung. So wurden Schaugärten schon von verschiedenen Ländern des Commonwealth, arabischen Scheichs, großen Zeitungen und Fernsehsendern sowie dem Prince of Wales gesponsert. Häufig werden Schaugärten nach der Ausstellung auch an anderen Orten wieder aufgebaut.
